Before arriving in Hong Kong, I had always been resistant to the ‘Groupon phenomenon’ and other similar schemes. I used to be slightly repelled/embarrassed at the idea of bringing a printed-out coupon with a barcode to, say, some salon or restaurant demanding services for a third of the usual price.
