I woke up at 2:44pm today, not so well rested after coming home at around 4 in the morning. Maybe I’ll narrate the story of last night next time (it’s actually an interesting one), but today’s post is about Clockenflap, Hong Kong’s largest music and arts festival.

Established in 2007, Clockenflap as a high-quality outdoor music and arts festival is the only one of its kind in Hong Kong. This year’s clockenflap was a two-day festival at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade boasting five music stages, a film tent, a crafts market, a dedicated kid’s area, etc. (http://www.clockenflap.com/vision)

I wasn’t actually sure I was going to Clockenflap until around 6pm. Chinese-Indonesian Ronald (in the 2nd picture) and I met up at Jordan station at around 5pm to go to St. Andrew’s Church for mass… for the first time in a very long time. When we got to the Church, we realized it wasn’t a Catholic Church but an Anglican one (they had no holy water at the front, which Ronald looked for, and the usherette didn’t understand me when I asked what time the mass started. She said, we don’t have mass, this is not a Catholic Church…). We were actually quite disappointed about this. I really wanted to see the purple advent-wreath-candle lit and (believe it or not) wanted to actually do the sit-down-stand-up-kneel-and-sing ritual of Catholic mass.

After the failed attempt to hear mass, we ate (my first meal of the day) and headed to Kowloon West to meet up with Alex, Kiko, etc. for Clockenflap. I wasn’t as cold as I was yesterday, thankfully, and was able to enjoy the festival, especially the performance of Santogold. The venue was amazing as well, that whole promenade has a spectacular view not only of the ICC (which you can see in this picture) but of the whole harbor (and the HK Island skyline) as well. Many of the bands we heard, though, were quite poor (or maybe the sound system just made them all sound tone-deaf - but that doesn’t really make up for the lyrics or spiels, does it), and I find a lack of overall friendly and fun atmosphere. If you went to Clockenflap, let me know what you think :)

Finally, I can’t believe it’s my last 3 days in Hong Kong!!! I will actually miss this city, sorely, for the next month that I won’t be here. I hope I get to say all the necessary goodbyes before everyone goes their separate ways.

With love,
